A nation moves forward if its citizens are educated. The truism of this belief is evident among developed nations.

Citizens who are not properly educated or never had any education at all become liabilities of the government both economically and socially.

The impact of education had now been realized by many due to their awareness of their rights and privileges as citizens of free nations. These citizens often feel deprived of their rights and at times incapable of performing their social duties because of their lack of education.

Adult Education had paved way in opening opportunities for these citizens – opportunities not only of employment but also of self- development.

Some of the important aspects of Adult Education are the following:

1.      Adults would be able to enjoy the full benefits of citizenship.

  • Right to education. Every citizen is born with inherent rights that would promote his/her well-being. Adult Education aims to make-up for the right to education which was in a way was deprived from him/her.
  • Equality of the law. Ignorance of the law excuses no one. Many have died because of that ignorance not only of the law, but also of their rights. Education decreases one’s vulnerability in abuses with regards to the law.
  • Political rights. Everyone is free to practice their right to suffrage but illiteracy is a hindrance in fully benefiting from this right. Many illiterate voters all over the world had experienced oppression and lose their capability to choose for a political candidate to vote. Education also is the main criteria in running for public office. No matter how noble the intentions of a person are, if he hasn’t had enough education no one will easily entrust him with any public position.

2.       Economic Growth. Education is a first step towards a better life. A good paying career requires a diploma and technical expertise – education provides both. Unless an adult acquires higher education, his chances of economic advancement would be vague.

3.      Personal Growth.. Many adults have low self-esteem and self-worth because of their educational shortcomings. For many of them, education is not mere learning but the uplifting of their morale. Their knowledge earns them the respect of others and even of themselves.

Sustainable Community. Adult Education is not directed on several individuals only. If the awareness of one community is raised, the whole nation rises by creating self-supporting and responsible citizens. A nation with citizens that rely mostly on the help that the government provide is a nation with resources that are mostly spent rather than gained. If majority of adult members in the community are educated and are in a way in service to the community through their skills, trade and industries would begin to flourish, sustaining the entire community.
