Part-Time Learner (PTL) denotes an individual enrolled in a non-traditional higher education program.

The program, called Part-Time Learning is a counterpart of the traditional “Full-Time Learning”. Part-Time Learning is more flexible that Full-Time Learning when it comes to credit hours. Most of the Part-Time Learners have jobs, other responsibilities that they must attend to, hindering them from attending full-time classes.

Certificate, diploma, undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in Part-Time Learning programs. Though more convenient, accomplishing such degrees may take longer than full-time degrees because credit hours are lesser.

These are some of the reasons why many opt for Part-Time Learning:

1.      Career advancement. Most part-time learners aim for the career qualifications and promotions that Part-Time Learning could offer. Fitting in the job that you really want would be very satisfying.

2.      You can balance your time. Many things would be sacrificed if you are schooling especially when you are keeping a job. But with Part-Time Learning, you don’t need to give up your job just to be able to pursue a degree.

3.      The bulk cost of education is lessened. Since the credit hours are lesser each term, the bulk cost of your studies won’t be that heavy compared to Full-Time Learning. There are also lots of financial aids available for Part-Time Learners.

Possible Obstacles in Part-Time Learning:

1.      Mindset. Clear your mind from the negative feedbacks you have about your past experiences on other education programs that you have encountered in the past. No matter how effective an education program, it won’t be of much good use for you if you won’t try to fit in.

2.      School policies. Some schools stick to the conventional admission rules that are applied to full-time degrees. Schedules are fixed and could not be adjusted according to your needs.

Personal shortcomings. There would always be circumstances that one cannot control. Your job can be more demanding than what you have expected and you may not be able to catch-up with the schoolwork.
